Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were married on
November 18, 2006 at Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy. The 150 guests in
attendance included Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Brooke
Shields, Chris Henchy, Jim Carrey, Jenny McCarthy, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett
Smith. As guests arrived, they were greeted by flag bearers dressed in colorful
Renaissance garb.
The wedding took place inside a converted
15th-century armory. The event was coordinated by Giorgio Armani’s niece,
Roberta Armani, who worked with the bride to put together the extravaganza. It
reportedly cost in the ballpark of $3.5 million. (The $50,000 rental fee for
Odescalchi Castle was waived as a wedding gift to the couple.)
The bride wore a Giorgio Armani
off-the-shoulder gown adorned with Valenciennes lace and Swarovski crystals.
The groom wore a navy two-button Armani tux. The couple’s seven-month-old
daughter, Suri Cruise, wore an ivory silk tulle Armani frock and was carried in
the processional by brother Connor Cruise.
As the ceremony began, Cruise walked down a
stone ramp to the roll of drums. The ramp was lined with flag bearers in
medieval costumes. He was followed by Holmes, who walked down the ramp on the
arm of her father, clutching a bouquet of calla lilies arranged by Roberta
Armani. During the 20-minute Scientology ceremony, the couple exchanged Cartier
wedding bands and vowed never to go to sleep in anger.
Following the nuptials, a reception was
held in the castle’s Hall of the Caesars, decorated with thousands of white and
red roses. The bride changed into a peach silk organza dress by Armani before
joining Cruise for their first dance, “Songbird” by Fleetwood Mac.
Guests were seated for dinner which was
catered by Dal Bolognese, the groom’s favorite restaurant in Rome. The menu
included risotto, sea bass with artichokes, and parmesan-crusted fillet. Andrea
Bocelli serenaded the couple with Italian love songs “Occhi di fata” ( “Fairy
Eyes” ) and “La Serenata” ( “The Serenade” ), as guests toasted with Barbesco
wine and champagne. For dessert, the couple fed each other a five-tier, white
chocolate mousse cake decorated with marzipan roses.
After the meal, guests moved outside to a
courtyard to watch a fireworks display accompanied by classical music.
Following the fireworks, guests retired to
a castle hall decorated to look like a nightclub. DJ Mark Ronson spun tunes
including Righteous Brothers’ hit “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling.” Cruise
recreated the scene in “Top Gun,” where he sings to Kelly McGillis, by singing
to Holmes. Later in the evening, Jennifer Lopez sang along to one of her own songs.
The following morning, the couple departed
for their Maldives honeymoon aboard the Arctic P, a yacht owned by Tom’s good
friend, James Packer.
